WATSONVILLE — Members of the Watsonville gym on Penny Lane have been watching the facility undergo several changes during the past month as new owners Luis and Jade Gomez renovate and expand offerings.
The couple bought the business from Harry and Anna Jenkins, who continue to own the property as well as operate Capitola-based Spa Fitness Centers.
The nearly 25,000-square-foot facility in Watsonville has a long fitness history. The Jenkins bought the Green Valley Athletic Club in 1987 and grew membership to about 3,000 people. In the deal completed last month, existing membership contracts were honored by the new owners, who have renamed the gym Lifestyle Fitness. Many Spa Fitness employees who worked in Watsonville continue to work at the gym for their new employers.
“I’m excited for the members who’ve been here for a long time,” said Brooke Valentine, who worked for Spa Fitness for 30 years before taking the position at Lifestyle Fitness as manager of sales, marketing and advertising. “They have a longer vision to get grants and get into the community and have youth programs here so they can educate the young people of Watsonville on health, fitness and nutrition.”
For Luis Gomez, a Watsonville native, former professional soccer player and a member at the gym already, ownership will mean an opportunity to work in something he’s passionate about. Jade Gomez is an administrator at Planned Parenthood and is involved in the new business venture as well.
The facility has a weight-training area, cardio equipment and a six-lane pool. It’s only been a month, but changes include new flooring, cardio equipment and fitness accoutrements like kettle bells and stability bells. They plan to add a women’s only workout area, more popular classes such as Zumba and yoga and women only/men only spas with Jacuzzis, saunas and steam rooms.
Spa Fitness Centers continues to serve about 10,000 members from its two facilities on 41st Avenue.
Harry Jenkins, 84, still stops by daily, said daughter Stephanie Jenkins who runs the business for her parents.
“It’s been their whole lives. All of us were excited about what they were going to do with it,” she said. “They wanted to do lot of exciting things and we wanted to take care of our members.”
