SCOTTS VALLEY – Electric motorcycle maker Zero Motorcycles has begun selling its street models in Australia, making it the first company to offer a street legal electric motorcycle in the country, the company announced recently.
“Australians have been thinking that electric motorcycles are years away from being seen on the roads,” said Phil Wilkinson, director of Zero Motorcycles Australia. “From the response we’re getting, Australians can expect to see many Zeros on the road in the months to come.”
The company has been selling its off-road X and MX models in Australia for about a year. Now, with the availability of the Zero S and DS, which have a range of up to 50 miles and are highway legal, Australians have access to the company’s entire product line.
John Lloyd, vice president of worldwide sales for the company, said the company looks “forward to continuing to expand our presence throughout the region.”
Earlier this year, the company won a $900,000 grant from the California Energy Commission to begin development of a new advanced compact electric power-train project. Additional matching funds from the city of Santa Cruz, where the company plans to build a new manufacturing and sales office, and others means the company has $1.84 million to build.
