Burdened with what seemed a hopeless AIDS diagnosis in 1988, Doug Sharpe sold his flower business and his life insurance policy and prepared to die.

“There was basically no hope on the horizon,” Mr. Sharpe says. “I was told by my doctor to go home and pack my bags, really, to take a trip.” (MORE)
